What is Head-up Display (HUD)?

Drivers want to keep their eyes on the road as much as possible for their safety and the safety of fellow road users. Any distraction can be one too many. Even the moment their eyes are focused on the dashboard to check your speed or view your navigation, even if it’s just a fraction of a second, their eyes are not busy with the traffic on the road.

Head-Up Display (HUD) is a display that projects essential information for the driver on the windshield. The display is only visible from the driver’s seat and with information displayed at the bottom of your widescreen. Information often displayed is, for example, the speed, directions with upcoming turns and road numbers, blind spot warnings, and traffic signs.

New market requirements

The rapid shift toward advanced HUD technologies like AR‑HUD, Slope HUD, and Dual HUD—combined with growing ADAS integration—is dramatically raising optical performance demands, with wider fields of view, longer focal distances, and more varied driver viewpoints making ghosting and image distortion far more challenging to control.

Our S-LEC™ Customized Wedge Film solution provides the possibility to flexibly customize the wedge angle profile and thickness to support a wide range of purposes and technologies.

Solution for multiple driver’s eye points

Double images may occur with AR HUDs when the driver’s viewpoint height changes.

SEKISUI S-LEC addresses this issue by customizing the wedge angle profile to ensure an optimal viewing experience at both high and low viewpoints. This improves the clarity of the HUD image when the driver’s viewpoint height changes.

Solution for ADAS camera’s

As automotive manufacturers advance the development of autonomous driving technology, new systems are being introduced into vehicles in order to realise the goal of fully autonomous vehicles. The ADAS system is one of the key technologies being introduced for this purpose.

S-LEC™ Customized Wedge Film can be used to make a suitable wedge angle profile to ensure suitable angles for both the HUD area and the ADAS camera area, contributing to the safe operation of both technologies.

Projection image with varying focal distance

A slope  AR head-up display projects virtual images by continuously varying the focal distance. The continuous change in the focal distance of the displayed image can sometimes result in a double image appearing.

SEKISUI S-LEC can customize the wedge angle profile to address this issue. Appropriately adjusting the wedge angle for the continuously changing focal length improves the clarity of the HUD image.

Dual HUD

Dula-plane HUD that can display the information required for driving into two screens

Dual-plane HUD projects information in two tiers, upper and lower, using different focal distances.

SEKISUI S-LEC offers the possibility to customize the wedge angle profile, adjusting it to different angles for the upper and lower tiers. This simultaneously enhances the clarity of the HUD image on both display surfaces.
